SunRiver 2011

Without a doubt my family's favorite vacation destination is a campground outside of SunRiver Oregon.

We've been going to this particular campground for probably about 10 years.  I love Eastern Oregon.  If I could live there I would.  I love how warm it is in the daytime and yet cools off in the evening.

I loved sharing our favorite place with my family this past week.  We spent 6 days there with my sister and her 3 children and my brother's 2 children, + my own & for a short while her friend. We had plenty of adventures.  We went Kayaking (a sport I actually enjoy!)

frog hunting,

swimming in the pool,

and floating in the river (not pictured because the photographer *ME* was in the water
miniature golfing (love it!)....gotta hole in one!

 biking

shopping in SunRiver
they bought books!

a wacky scavenger hunt

and tons and tons and tons of walking.  WE also got about a zillion mosquito bites and my daughter's friend had an allergic reaction to the bites (bummer),  two of my nieces got bee stings but they were mild and treatable (whew), I got a bad sunburn and blister and then burned my arm on our stove.  For a while I thought we had a miniature first aid station operating out of our camp site.  It was memorable and worth all of the itching and anti-histamines

very cool- literally

We just had the coolest experiece and I had to share. We (as in the town I live in...NOT just my family....) have the fun opportunity of having the special olympics here in town (I hear rumors that it will be for the next 4 years.). I'd heard that they needed vollunteers and so in mid may I started trying to convince my daughter to do it. She was less than motivated. First her school and then our church contacted us asking us to vollunteer. To my hubby and I it was somewhat irresistible, so we signed all of us up (daughter and foriegn exchange student included). Early on Saturday morning we all walked up the road to where the Olympics (or at least the part that we were asked to help with) was being held. I was excited to literally have it 5 minutes up the road. We shivered as we walked (since it was raining and cold). We were assigned to be officials and score keepers in Bocce Ball....."Bocce Ball??????" We had to goggle the rules and still were confused. Fortunately, they had a very thorough volunteer training and we were able to figure out what to do. The girls shivered and shook as they scored the games but JR and I were warm as we officiated (sounds so official doesn't it?). The athletes are so polite and friendly. The knew their rules and they came to play and were actually very competitive. Just like in all other aspects of life I found that the men were much more competitive and even contemplative while playing while the women cheered each other on and were a bit more animated. I can't begin to tell you how much fun it was. I totally, definitely want to do it again. It was an experience worth repeating!

I'm so lucky!

I've been an Activity day Girl's leader for 7 years.  I've done lots of fun things with my girls.  I enjoy spending time with them.  The highlight of my year is our annual Day Camp.

I initiated the day camp 4 years ago but it was in the making for 2 years.
Our girls were always asking us if we could go 'do something' , go camping or something.  They saw the scouts doing all sorts of adventurous stuff and they felt left out.  Since there is no provision for camp for 8-11 year old girls in our church and we had no budget or leadership support to pull it off I had no answer for the girls that they wanted to hear.  Each time I told them "No" it resonated in my ears.  So, I began plotting and finally 3 years later I had the budget and the priesthood leadership on my side to begin a day camp.

Our day Camp is named "Giggly Girls Day Camp".  The girls 4 years ago named it and we kept it.  The name is very appropriate as the girls literally giggle the entire day away.

Our camp is one day long.  It begins at 10 am and ends with dinner and s'mores with our daddy's at 7 pm. We try really hard to have a balance of active activities (hiking and archery), crafts and free time.  It took me a few years to learn that all of these girls this age really want need is to be taught something new and fun to share with their parents and friends (such as archery), make something cute to take home and have time to play with their friends in a fun, supervised but not overly organized environment.  It's really a simple recipe and works whether it's day camp or our article of faith carnival or even just our bi-weekly activities.

This year as day camp approached I felt overwhelmed and un-prepared.  I was anxious as day camp approached.  then, I show up at camp and it goes beautifully.  The reason why....
fabulous co-leaders who shared the load

....and sweet giggly girls with great attitudes who are happy just to be there.

You can do it too!

Another series of family events has just been completed!

As an avid family scrapbooker and family documentarian I love big family events.  I sit down at my handy dandy lil' computer, boot up my Heritage Maker's page and start digi scrapping.  I get a lot of comments from people after I finish my projects.  Words like "Of course you got your pages done, you're so good at that" (thanks for stroking the ole' ego), and 'If I had time I would do it too".  Most commonly though I get a comment of " I just don't know where to start."

So, I'm here to give you some tips of what to do...how to stay on top of your family events.

First off, I am NOT saying you have to scrapbook them.  As a an avid scrapbooker I find people often misinterpret my enthusiasm for all things scrapbook to mean that I think THEY should also scrapbook.  While I would NEVER urge anyone away from scrapbooking (as I do love it), I realize that non-scrapbookers feel overwhelmed and even excluded  as if they are somehow failures on some odd level.  One of the reasons I love being a Heritage Maker consultant is because if a person wants to have a scrapbooky look but doesn't posses the skills they can access our truly amazing template gallery and use the designs to create original & beautiful finished projects.  BUT for some even that is overkill.  For this reason I am writing this post.  Perhaps it will be appreciated, perhaps not.

So, you have just finished taking pictures or have received pictures from a big family event.  In my case it was a trip/wedding & baby shower all in one.   You could have hundreds of photos.  What do you do?

Step 1:  Take some time to organize your photos.
Your photos will come pre-named by your camera (for example P249).  Pleeeeease change that name.  Here's what I do (use it if you have a more effective method yourself  please let me know.)First I create a folder in my pictures (I am a PC user, adapt for MAC) with the year, so this year is 2011.  Then, I create subfolders for each following event using the date and then name of the event.  For example 06052011 babyshower.  This automatically files each event numerically while still keeping events separate.  Inside that file I then re-name the pictures by selecting all of the pictures and selecting re-name from the drop down menu.   You can even create separate subcategories within that folder, for example 06052011giftpics. It is especially helpful if you have an event such as a trip that occurs over several days.  It can help you to keep the different events separated by date while allowing all of your trip pictures to remain in one photo album.

Step 2:  Save your photos
Whenever you upload a lot of pictures onto your computer you do need to make sure you do a backup on an external hard drive,  zip drive or other external storage.  I always upload mine to my Heritage Maker's account as well as onto my external hard drive.  It takes minutes but can save you a lot of grief.

May I also add SHARE your photos.  e-mail them, blog them, upload them to picasa or a similar engine for family and friends to access.  Pool your pictures with others at the event or on the trip.  This serves 2 purposes.  One you may get better photos (as someone might have a better camera or be a better photographer), 2 other people will then be saving your photos in case something happens to them.  Share, Share, Share!!!

If you have done steps 1 & 2  you are doing great.  Please don't stop there.

Step 3:  SAVE & SCAN
Was it a baby shower?  Was there a paper invite?  Scan it!  Wedding Invite?  Scan it?  Tickets to a play?  Scan them?  Lable them and put them in the photo files with your other photos .  Make sure you back them up and then you can either save them in your journal or recycle them.  Personally I find that those little paper reminders floating around make me feel cluttered and undone.  So scan them and move on.  (on a side note:  e-vites are a fun new part of life but they also drive me bonkers... but now I take a screen shot of the evite and still get that paper invite feel.  Save the screen shot as a photo.  For those of you who don't know what a screen shot is...it is a fabulous way to essentially take pictures of what's going on on your computer.  Many newer computers come with the ability to do screen shots.  If not you can download a product called Jing that will allow you to capture these kinds of things. )

Step 4:  Journal it!

For my blogging friends out there.  Keep it up.  Print out the fabulous blog books!  So much fun!  Blogging is such a fantastic way to document our lives.  However----  many people choose to limit either photos or personal information on blogs since it is so public.  I choose to reveal some but not too much so I would never use my blog as my personal journal but I do use it as a jumping off point.

I write down whatever I can and save it as a word document inside my photo files.  Did you know you can do that?  YES YOU CAN!  That way when I get around to doing with the pictures I have my journaling and notes to go along with the scrapbooking, or whatever.

what to journal?

NAMES!  What was the name of the friend that threw the party?  What was the name of that fantastic photographer?  How old are your nieces and nephews?  What is the dog's name. What is the name of that place? Information we think we will always remember slides to the side over the years and is essentially useless to further generations unless we write it down.

Funny factoids.  Try to keep your information detailed and upbeat.  Try to write information about as many people as you can.   After all you would never want to write 30 glowing things about 1 person in your family, 5 semi interesting things about another and then just mention that the last person was there.    You do not need a lot of information.  Just keep it real to you and to the situation.

Feelings.  How did you feel while at that event?  How did you feel seeing your cousins again after 10 years?  How did you feel about the weather?

Ok- so you may not have a scrapbook but you are caught up!  Now you can upload your pictures to your favorite digital picture frames, or get them printed off, go the Heritage Makers and make a book or whatever you want!   Take your time because you've got everything ready.  When you have it all ready it's a fast, easy, FUN project!

dats how I do it

A long while ago I wrote a blog post about organizational styles titled "solving a small problem".  In it I describe my discovery that I am a visual organizer.  That little discovery about myself has been life altering.  I no longer squander my money or time on organizational techniques that are practical, instead I spend my time making my things look cute and color coded, personalized and more fun!!!!  And it works.

One visual organizing tool I have used for a number of years is a home notebook.  I've used one casually for all of the interesting little things that I have needed in the past to run my home efficiently.  This year, however I realized I needed to make a BIG change.  My daughter entered High School.  Suddenly I was always having to sign something and then access it quickly.  Things that in the past would have been relegated to a filing cabinet to be weeded out at the end of the year now had to be accessible all of the time.... everything from grade and assignment tracking (which is now online, that I print out to track my daughter).... charges for individual classes...vaccination records, doctors visits (more visits this past year than in the past 4 years combined).  I was drowning in paper work and having to access all of it at the drop of a hat.  So, I adopted my home notebook and turned it into my peekaboo tracker.
digital artwork by persnickity prints collection entitled spring has sprung
I now have 2 separate notebooks.  My 'home' notebook and my 'peekaboo's home notebook AKA peekaboo's tracker).  The advantage to this....?  When I take her to a Dr.'s appointment or have a meeting at her school I grab the whole notebook and go.  I can then immediately access phone numbers, addresses, paperwork and dates during the meeting.  In the past a lot of this would be in my day planner or digital planner but over time I realized that so much of this info is confidential & I need more than just a quick name or phone number...., the notebook has been my salvation.

So, here are my dividers (tabs) in my daughter's tracker
  • seminary
  • school contact (ie: phone #'s and e-mail addresses of principle, school councilor, teachers, etc.  along with a copy of her schedules, copies of her progress reports web logins for school related things (myschoobucks, school store, math helps, copies all of the sylubus's that I sign , map of the school & emergency contact information.
  • Young Women's
  • Immunization records, and list of current doctors
  • physical health
  • mental health
  • dental health
  • attendance and grades
  • extra curricular activities

In my home notebook is:
  • address book
  • individual tabs for each pets (with copies of their vaccination records and vet visits & bills)
  • pantry checklist (food storage goals and plans)
  • tabs for hubby & me (doctors and dental visits) * although my hubby tracks his own so it's not so bad
So, there's my spiel.  How I make my life function.  So far it's working.
Here are a few more of my recent projects.  All I did was taken a notebook that I was already using and cut & attach some vinyl to make it look cuter and more personalized...ala my need to have it look cute!
my dayplanner *aka* lifeline.  I put a monkey in the 'see no evil' pose.  thought it was appropriate for my day planner.

I have a separate notebook for everything.  This is my notebook I'm using this one in some studying I'm doing right now.
